Timber SalesThe marketing of timber is an area that we both enjoy yet approach quite seriously. To reiterate, we must be stewards of the land while carrying out our forestry practices. Our fee for this service is generally a percentage of the gross sale. We prefer to conduct lump-sum, cash-in-advance transactions.
A timber sale generally begins with an appraisal of the standing timber. Following the inventory, a specific number of trees can be identified and marked for a selective harvest. We then offer the timber for sale in the form of a lump sum bid. A bid invitation, outlining the terms and conditions of the sale, is prepared and distributed to insured, reputable buyers. If the timber is sold and the title is clear, we assist with the preparation of the timber sale contract and supervise the harvesting operation and replanting. This process enables maximum control over the operation and maximum yields for the landowner.
We will:
- Identify the specific timber to be harvested.
- Evaluate the timber market and make recommendations based on sales forecasting.
- Contact reputable, insured buyers to publicize the timber sale.
- Show the timber to potential buyers.
- Sell the timber to potential buyers.
- Assist in the preparation of sales contracts.
- Supervise and inspect the harvest to prevent damage to the land and injury to the remaining stand.
- Provide protection of water, soil, and other natural resources during the harvest with proper erosion control management.
- Prepare the site for reforestation, including tree planting.
- Develop a management plan including multiple-use and sustained yield programs.
- Identify potential management opportunities, problems, and needs.
Our goal is to minimize environmental impact while maximizing long-term timber production. We monitor logging operations to ensure that merchantability of felled timber is maximized.
Why harvest? A properly managed forest can provide significant financial, aesthetic, wildlife and recreational benefits. Trees die from natural causes, including old age and overcrowding. Removing trees that are dead or declining, or thinning crowded stands, improves the health of the remaining stand. In addition to providing improved wildlife habitat, good management usually makes your forest safer and more attractive for recreational uses. We will help you evaluate your objectives, the value and distribution of the timber you have for sale, along with what is best for the stand, and the nature of the land to determine the method of harvesting that is best for you.
